So I finally saw Pacific Rim tonight and it was totally great! Even though the movie is being deemed a flop, the theater we saw it in was pretty fucking packed, so much so that we were stuck watching it only four rows away from the screen, as a result, the picture was so big to me I could hardly take everything in.

I'm kinda surprised more people haven't been making Attack on Titan jokes in reference to this movie; after all, the mechs are called fucking JAEGERS. As soon as I found that out I started yelling "WIR SIND DIE JAEGER!!" but anyway…

When people say this film is like a cross between Evangelion and like…IDK, Godzilla or whatever, IT IS TRUE. Now, I know Guillermo del Toro intended this to be a love letter/homage to giant mecha animu in general but all the stuff that jumped out to me the most seemed to be derived from Eva.

FOR INSTANCE:

• Having your body in synch with the Jaeger/connecting to it via the spine and when it gets injured, you feel pain is VERY Eva-ish.
• The whole piloting a Jaeger in unison with someone seems lifted from the episode Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win! where Shinji and Asuka have to practice some choreography in order to defeat an Angel that can split in two.
• The mind-meld/Mako's traumatic flashback seems like it was taken from the episode where Asuka gets mind-raped.
• Having to breach some kinda barrier/series of barriers to kill all the Kaiju in their crazy world in the center of the earth seems to be both a reference to AT fields and the black moon thing that houses NERV HQ (then again, I feel like I'm seriously reaching with this one).
• This is unrelated to EVA but it's still Gainax and it's still a giant robot show; I felt like Stacker being sick from radiation from having piloted the first Jaegers was a reference to the coach in Gunbuster slowly dying from space cancer or some shit.
• This is also unrelated to Eva (and Gainax) but the rocket elbows seemed VERY Big O-ish…but I'm sure rocket-launching arms were around in much earlier mecha shows like…IDK, Mazinger Z or Getter Robo or something. Or maybe even Giant Robo.
• Oh yeah, when it comes to Godzilla stuff, the leitmotif that plays whenever a Kaiju shows up sounds like the original Godzilla theme, yanno, BUUUUUUUUUUUUH-BUH-BUH-BUH-BUH- BUUUUUUUUUUH-BUH-BUH-BUH-BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH very slow and fat and horn-honky.

Aside from that, I didn't really feel like this movie had as many prominent POC characters as I assumed; I mean, Mako and Stacker are AWESOME and great characters (I was just so amped when Stacker made his big epic speech before he piloted the Jaeger again) with lots of screen-time but aside from them and Tendo Choi, it's mostly all LOLWHITEDUDES and all the POC are just background characters.

Before I saw the movie and only saw tidbits about it on Tumblr, I was getting a major G Gundam vibe simply because the premise of the film seemed to be "people from all over the world team up to pilot giant robots". However, they didn't really spend much time on the pilots other than Raleigh, Mako and the Australian dudes. The basketball-playing Chinese triplets and peroxide blonde Russians were just sorta there (the Russian guy was hilarious 'cuz he looked like a Street Fighter character).

Also, Ron Pearlman's character Hannibal Chau seems very…"Mandarin in Iron Man 3-ish", as in, he was supposed to be Asian but became not-Asian. Also, his name is anime as FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKK. I had flashes of Mashymire Cello and Chara Soone in my head when I heard his ridiculous name, which is always good. More Gundam-style nonsense names!

I love Mako but I kinda felt like she wasn't as much of a hard-ass as her infographic in the Pacific Rim artbook made her seem, she's a very outwardly vulnerable character in this film. It wasn't ridiculously so but I felt like it was kinda skirting maybe a delicate lotus flower trope? Plus I'm just not into her ~~~relationship~~~ with the main white guy. I was so glad they just nuzzled and hugged at the end of the movie. NO DAMN KISSES! NO DAMN MIGHTEY WHITEY!

Also, I wish instead of just wearing jumpsuits and fatigues when not battling Kaiju, the pilots spent their time lounging in the bodysuits that go underneath the Jaeger armor, that shit's sexy as fuck, looks like some Tron-style shit (aside from seeing some concept art online, you don't even get to see that shit in the movie!!!).

I'm feeling pretty garbage right now, sick AND stressed out. You see, I've been perpetually sick with some kinda cold/sore throat for the past two weeks...well it went away and now I've got a cyst on my right tonsil again, so I have to go to the doctor tomorrow and get more pills for that, IN ADDITION to the fact that I'm on my period and incapacitated from cramps. >_>V

The stressed-out-ness is due to the fact that, in addition to being sick, my great-grandma had a stroke over the weekend and she's getting out of the hospital, so now my mom is going down to San Jose to take care of her for the foreseeable future (otherwise she'd just be sent to a nursing home and we don't trust nursing homes). So with my mom leaving, I'm gonna have to be head of the household for...god knows how long, great...
I'm gonna hafta' clean, cook dinner, do laundry (UGH I DON'T KNOW HOW I'M A FUCKING BABBY I STINK) and go grocery shopping. I'm just kinda dreading this since, even though my dad and sister are supposed to pull their own weight, I'm afraid Kelly's just gonna run roughshod over everything and my dad will just drink and fall asleep on the couch and not do any fucking thing...which is what he already does, BUT STILL!!

Depending upon whether or not grandma gets better or just dies, my dad is gonna be bringing the rest of us down there to visit for spring break/Easter...my mom also said that I might have to move down there in April and help out/keep them company for like, a few months. *sigh* I dunno how to deal with this.

I totally forgot RAW was tonight (it doesn't feel like Monday) and I flicked it to see Mae Young giving birth to Hornswoggle dressed as the Baby New Year
